Outdoor Groups Schedules Swim

Anyone for a swim to beat the heat??

The Outdoor Group is planning a trip to France Park near Logansport on Saturday, July 9.  France Park is known for its scenic trails, waterfall, clear swimming lake, quiet fishing areas, campground.  The 7-10 miles of trails are active all year long with hiking, mountain biking, and winter-time cross-country skiing. The swimming lake is an abandoned spring-fed quarry that attracts SCUBA divers and anyone who has never seen a paddlefish.

France Park also offers the camping enthusiast both primitive and modern camping with bathrooms, showers, water & electrical hook-up.

We'll meet at the church Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. and car pool from there.  Plan for all day and returning in the early evening.  Every child must be accompanied by an adult.  Dogs are welcome in the park but not on the beach.

See Tandy Easler for more details.

Social Responsibility Committee

This summer and fall the Social Responsibility Committee is sponsoring an exciting opportunity that you won’t want to miss.

The first event occurs July 15-17 when a “team” from the fellowship will work at the Ford Dining Court on Stadium Avenue serving attendees at the Purdue University Methodist Men conference.

The $6 hourly rate each worker would normally be paid will instead be donated to the Social Responsibility Committee to support our community projects: purchasing food for the Food Pantry as well as items for Cary Home, Women’s Shelter, and Lafayette Urban Ministry.

To participate, sign the sign-up sheet on the table upstairs at the back of the church.

Workers will be expected to work three- to four-hour shifts. You may sign up for one shift or more. You must be at least fourteen years of age (and have a work permit) to participate. Workers will do a variety of jobs in this beautiful air-conditioned facility.

Past volunteers have enjoyed this money making experience and have had a great sense of satisfaction from contributing to this committee’s work. For more information on working at this dining court, see Mary Ann Foley or Sue Robinson.

If you aren’t able to work in July, there will also be opportunities during the weeks of August 15 and 22.  Sign-up sheets for those weeks will be available later.

Thank you to each of you who have contributed to our Caring Cans food collections.  Thank you notes from the organizations we support can be found on the bulletin board at the back of the sanctuary.

SRC has another successful clothing drive!  Thanks to all of our church  supporters, we collected 234 bags of clothing and a full rack of  business clothes. The business clothes will be taken to several agencies in the next few weeks.  Thank you for your contributions!

SRC chair, Sue Robinson

Building and Grounds Coordinator: Patty Wood

Patty Wood has agreed to serve as the Building & Grounds Coordinator for the church.  I've spent many evenings at Patty's home and have witnessed her competence in home repairs and maintenance, but we assured her that as coordinator, she would be responsible only for arranging for volunteers to perform specific tasks when needed.

Patty will need a list of people willing to do specific tasks, and especially volunteers with specific skills.

If you are willing to perform specific tasks, or if you have specific skills you are willing to share (wood working, painting, plumbing, computers, etc.), please contact Patty.  She will place your name on the Building and Grounds Volunteer List, and contact you if needed.  It would be encouraging to have several names on this volunteer list.

Patty, many thanks!

Dianna Poindexter, Board Co Chair

Caregiver’s Support Group Meets Monthly

If you are caring for a partner, spouse, child, parent, family member, or friend facing a chronic or terminal health issue, you need support, too.

This small, confidential group provides a safe place to share the challenge of ongoing caregiving and receive insight and support from others – whose challenges are not exactly the same – but whose insights may prove useful. Each month group members remark on how helpful it is to share the puzzles, lessons, joys, and the struggles of caregiving.

The group meets at the church on the fourth Tuesday of the month.  If you are interested in this group you can also call the minister for further information.

Book Group

Enjoy a book this summer and share the experience with friends.  Join us for discussions of the books we're planning to read this summer:

7 p.m., Monday, July 11, 2005         “One Thousand White Women” by Jim Fergus

7 p.m., Monday, Aug. 8, 2005         “Julie and the Dream Maker” by P.J. Fischer

The Book Group meets on the second Monday of every month at 7 p.m. at Borders Bookshop in Wabash Landing in the lounge area where it joins with Panera’s.  All are welcome to join us for discussions of books selected by participants.

For more information contact Dagmar Murray.

Car Wash for Cary Home

Have your car washed and give to a worthy cause at the same time!  The residents of Cary Home for Children are holding their annual car wash and craft sale on Saturday, June 18, from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. on the shady grounds of Cary Home at 1530 South 18th Street. (The rain date is Sunday, June 19.)  The cost is $5 and proceeds go to support Cary Home.

Like so many agencies supported by local government, Cary Home has experienced budgetary constraints and needs your help. Cary Home is the only residential treatment facility for children who are unable to remain in the care of their families for a variety of reason. Our church has long supported Cary Home through the Social Responsibility Committee, and our own Malcolm Easler is on the staff there. Several other congregants are members of The Friends of Cary Home, a charitable support group for the home.

Unitarian Universalist Association Stewardship & Development Survey

The UUA is planning its next major fund-raising campaign. We'd appreciate the input of your congregational lay leaders including Board & Council members, committee chairs, past presidents, etc. Respondents may take the survey by pasting the following address in their web browser: http://www.zoomerang.com/survey.zgi?p=WEB224787KYRET

Your opinions will help set the direction of the campaign, which will ultimately support our congregations, other UU organizations, and Unitarian Universalism as a whole.

Social Action Committee Happenings

As you are enjoying the lazy summer days, please note that much is happening both in the church and in the community to further our social action agenda. Here are some up and coming events:

Several members and friends attended the first public forum on Child Abuse and Neglect in Tippecanoe County held earlier this spring. A second forum is scheduled for Wednesday, June 29 at 7 p.m. at the Tippecanoe County Office Building in downtown Lafayette. If you have concerns or questions about this troubling and significant issue in our community, plan to attend the second forum.

In July, the UU Social Action Committee will discuss this issue and how we as a church may want to consider addressing it. Our July meeting is on Wednesday, July 13 at 7 p.m. Lynn Richardson will lead our discussion on child abuse prevention.

On the following day, Wednesday, June 30, we are co-sponsoring two talks by Sheila Provencher, a member of Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT).

CPT is an ecumenical organization which places teams of trained peacemakers to work with local partners in situations of violent conflict around the world. Sheila has lived in Iraq since December 2003 and will describe her work in assisting detainees and their families and to bring members “ Nonviolent Peacemaking in Iraq: Stories of Struggle and Hope.”  She will speak at noon at the Wesley Foundation at 435 W. State St, in WL and again at 7 p.m. at the WL Public Library, 208 W. Columbia St.

The UU Social Action Committee is co-sponsoring Sheila’s talks along with the Lafayette Area Peace Coalition, and St. Thomas Aquinas Pax Christi. Please put this date on your calendar and plan to attend one of Sheila’s presentations.

The UU Social Action Committee meets regularly on the second Wednesday of the month (except for June) at the church and we welcome all who have ideas, interests, and energy to devote to social action to join us.

Joan Marshall
Coordinator, Social Action Committee (until July when Charles Coley assumes this role)

Children’s Day Camp Help Needed

For the past few years, RE has offered a summer day camp for children over one week in the summer.  In order to run the camp this year we need volunteers!  If you are interested and available during the day to lead our campers in a UU exploration, please contact Sarah Boulac.

An RE Pledge Break

Michele Tomarelli, Co-DRE

Every year as we leave the spring RE curriculum and plan for the summer curriculum two events take place.

The first is RE Sunday, a favorite intergenerational service during which we hear from the kids about their perceptions of their Sunday School classes. We also thank and celebrate our hard working RE teachers and volunteers during the RE Sunday service.

Right around that same time of year we have a brave individual, usually Cheryl Fowler, wear the sandwich board advertisement asking people to sign up to be teachers and classroom aides for the summer.

We probably seem to be a lot like the NPR pledge drives: “Give more!” There is more than a passing similarity, I must admit. Like NPR, we interrupt your enjoyment of the UU good life to beg for your time and effort. (Money is nice, too, but we don’t usually ask for that. We’ll also take in-kind donations!) We don’t give away cool videos or mugs to big donors, but our goal is the same: high quality educational programming.

There are rewards. Teaching RE is often fun and while sometimes exhausting, is always worth doing. This is because there are no average children; they are all individuals. We have great kids. Oh, sure, we have some energetic children, but even our dynamos are sweeties and they are never boring!

Consider today’s column a pledge break. If you are a kind-hearted individual who wants to make a contribution to the next generation of Unitarian Universalists, come and donate yourself to the Religious Education Program. We need teachers and aides for both the summer and the fall programs.

Sunday Morning Forum

The Sunday Morning Forum meets at 9 a.m. in the Red Cross Building across the parking lot from the church. Everyone is welcome! Childcare is provided.

Three Meetings on Flowers

"People from a planet without flowers would think we must be mad with joy the whole time to have the things about us"

…Iris Murdoch.

June 19. "Establishing a Back Yard Habitat" Susan Urich. Susan Urich is a Board Member and Treasurer of NICHES Land Trust, a local organization dedicated to the acquisition and preservation of native habitats. She is full of energy and enthusiasm for enriching old-field areas with native wildflowers, tree seedlings, plugs and seeds of native species.

June 26. "English Gardens" Keith Brown. Keith is a retired economist from Purdue. Usually quiet and reserved, he displays an unrestrained enthusiasm on the topic of the true lily—not Hemerocallis, the day lily. Even as we write, he is returning from touring English gardens and he has quite a tale to tell.

July 3. "My Passion for Flowers" Terry Smith. A short time ago, Terry’s passion for flowers bloomed into a bold business plan when she opened the Rubia Flower Market on the Levee. No matter how busy, Terry has quietly beautified our church with fresh cut flowers for Sunday services and many other special occasions.

Minister’s Muse

Well, the summer is upon us.

It time for people to scatter with family and vacations, if they are lucky and the timing and money are right.

It is a time when we get around to tasks at home that we were hoping to get to. It’s time to find the kids something to do that makes their summer worthwhile. For me it is time to take the train to Fort Worth, Texas, and meet up with my colleagues during professional days and then to participate in the Unitarian Universalist General Assembly (GA).

Each year I say that GA is exciting. Some years lots of folks from this congregation attend and get energized and some years – well – not so many. This year we are fortunate to have Don and Ruth Ann Ferris attending.

Their steady attendance at GA means that they learn from other congregations and gather new insights to bring back so that we are not always reinventing the wheel.

And we are also fortunate to have Kaye McSpadden attending, who is our chair of Denominational Connections.  Kaye also attended our District Assembly this year. And Charles Coley will be attending as a volunteer – how fun is that!  I am sure that he will bring back lots of energy and insight to this congregation. At GA there will be countless meetings, workshops, opportunities to learn, connect, and make friends.

I look forward to General Assembly because I get to see so many colleagues, whom I miss during the year. There are shouts of joy, looks of fatigue, words of encouragement, long intense conversations, and lots of book suggestions. We hear one another’s stories and learnings from the inside of ministry.  I store up what I learn and bring it home with me like treasures.

So the summer begins and during that time I am absent from the pulpit for many weeks and on leave for one full month.  I use the time, carrying around a crate of books, to do all the reading I meant to get to during the year (as if I could….), to brainstorm for the next year, and to puzzle out life’s great mysteries… (so far no answers).

I am always reachable in case of emergency (see the box below). And never really feel far from the congregation no matter how far I may travel – this year to exotic Spring Green, Wisconsin, to deepen my study of the life of Jenkin Lloyd Jones and to North Carolina to see my Uncle David and other much loved family members. David is my oldest connection to Unitarian Universalism – since he’s been a Unitarian Universalist since before I signed the book in Pittsburgh at the age of 16.

It is my hope that, as summer scatters people that you also keep the congregation in your heart. Services are ongoing through the summer and often – to my frustration – I am away for exciting services that Worship and Music Committee works hard to bring together.

I hope that you keep coming to church and staying in touch with one another – because our innermost lives do not go on vacation in the summer. It is my hope that, during the summer, when there is a lull in congregational activities, you register for the Fall congregation retreat, think about where you can serve in the church, how you would like to grow and develop within the congregation, and how you can help make that happen.

It’s my hope that you think about offering your spiritual journey sometime soon and sign up for the workshop on Spiritual Journeys that will come around next year (not that you need a workshop to do this – it can just help and encourage the more shy among us.  It’s my hope that you keep up your giving and think of creative ways to increase it… It’s my hope that while you are away from this place you remember that it will be the powerful spiritual home that you make it.

Yours in love,

Hilary
