May 1 Congregational Meeting Highlights

Election of Officers for 2004-05
Nancy Patchen, chair of the Nominating Committee (which includes John Duvall, Kaye McSpadden, and Gary Fowler), presented the following slate:

Barny Dunning—Chair-elect
Volker Thomas—Trustee
Gale Kvam—Treasurer
Janice Thiel—Assistant Treasurer
Dagmar Murray—Secretary
Marty Patchen—Endowment Board
Lisa Pantea—Nominating Committee

The slate was approved.

Program Growth Initiatives
The Long Range Planning Committee presented program growth initiatives for 2006. These will serve as a guideline for the process of determining a budget. There were two general initiatives to serve all program areas, and they were: 1) Ensure continued creative, effective administration of the church by its lay leaders and 2) Develop a plan for accommodating growth. There were also specific initiatives for each of the program areas.

Social Action Committee Proposal
The Social Action Committee has requested that our congregation study a proposal for our church to become an organizational member of the Indiana Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice.

Kaye McSpadden solicted ideas for how to proceed with this study. Suggestions were given and they will be considered by the committee. It is hoped that the congregation will be able to vote on this proposal in the fall.

Investment of New Building Fund Money
The congregation voted to authorize Keith Brown to invest the money in the New Building fund in treasury bills or other high-yield secure investments.

Appreciation
Noemi Ybarra expressed gratitude to the outgoing members of the board of trustees—Gary Fowler, Mary Ann Foley, Don Ferris and Kathy Coder

Thank You, Roy Barnhart, for the pretty wooden enclosure you added to our mail slot! This should help keep the foyer a little warmer in the winter.

Tune into Sunday Morning Services!

Thanks to the help and know-how of Kyler Laird, we now have an FM broadcaster incorporated with the PA system in the sanctuary. It is currently set at 88.1 FM. This means anyone with an FM radio can tune in to Sunday morning services! You won’t be able to pick it up from home — the broadcast distance is very limited. However, within our building, and even from a car radio in the parking lot, the broadcast can be heard with no trouble.

Individuals routinely needing hearing assistance at service may simply want to bring their own portable radio and headphones. I will pick up a couple radios with headphones that will be available in the back of church. With the FM broadcast, there is no limit to the number of listeners. The nursery caregivers are already in the habit of tuning in to services on the boom box in the nursery!

                —Sharon McKnight, Sound System Coordinator

Highlights of April 12 Board Meeting

· The Stewardship Committee will work on finding a consultant for the pledge drive.

·  We need to find another internet service provider.  A decision was made to go with Netlink DSL.

· Union Street Fencing—We are investigating the possibility of having a dog park (primarily for the use of UUs) at the Union Street property.  A temporary fence has been put up for that purpose.

·  Endowment Board will be asked to investigate alternative investment strategies.

· Union Street Income—balance between rental income and utilities is good.  It was suggested that a report on the Union Street income be requested in November and made available at the December board meeting.

April’s Church Mouse Award goes to Amy French.  Amy has been an extremely energetic and helpful member of the Greeting and Membership Committee.  She has provided delicious appetizers, written the annual report, volunteered readily to contact people to do specific tasks and contributed new ideas from her former UU church in Michigan.  She is also working with the Stewardship Committee and the Pastoral Care Committee.  Amy, we thank you for your enthusiasm and your generous commitment of time and energy to the many programs of our church.

                                                                                                                —Kathy Coder,

                                                                                                                    Board Secretary

Clean Out Those Closets!

Mark your calendars for our clothing collection Saturday, June 11 in the church parking lot.

Goodwill gives us a $5 voucher for each bag of clothing donated. These vouchers are given to LUM, Cary Home, and the Women’s Shelter to be distributed.

Last year we were successful in collecting a few slightly used men’s and women’s business clothing on hangers and covered to be distributed to individuals needing clothing for interviews, funerals, etc.

Also keep in mind that Tippecanoe Child Care can use dress up clothes or jewelry when you are sorting your give away clothing.

The Social Responsibility Committee’s next meeting will be at noon on Sunday, May 15,

Room. All are welcome to attend.

                                —Sue Robinson

Mary Andrus Overly, Heartland’s District Executive for the past four years, announced her resignation at the district annual meeting and conference. Her last day of work was Friday,

The Board has accepted her resignation with grateful appreciation for the many gifts Mary brought to this role and which have contributed to the health and growth of the district over the years.

Religious Education Happenings

RE Co- Directors Sarah Boulac and Michele Tomarelli
RE Committee Co-Chairs: Beth Misner, Cheryl Fowler

On Sunday, May 1st, we had the opportunity to recognize the individuals completing the junior high Our Whole Lives sexuality education program. This year, twelve of our seventh, eighth, and ninth graders participated, committing many of their Sundays over the course of this year to this important program. The Religious Education Committee wants to thank all of our participants and their families for making this a priority; I know the benefits will last a lifetime.

The RE Committee also wishes to give special thanks to our co-facilitators, Cricket Steinweg and Paul Van Wyk who devoted much time and energy to planning, organizing, and facilitating this group. Because of their commitment, the OWL program could be offered this year, ensuring that this group of teens acquires the important knowledge and skills that the curriculum builds.

We traditionally offer the junior high OWL (Grades 7 - 9) every other year. There are curricula for grades Kindergarten - 1st, 4th - 6th, 10th - 12th as well as adults. It is in our Long Range Plan to offer OWL at all age levels. We have purchased copies of the curricula for each age level and need people to lead the classes (the curricula for the younger classes are much shorter than the junior high program). We are interested in hearing from individuals who would like to go through the training to become facilitators. Requirements to be an OWL facilitator include: being a part of our congregation for at least 9 months, filling out an RE Worker Screening Form with two references, having a background screen, and an openness and comfort in talking with children our youth about sexual issues.

This program is one that is so important and offers so many benefits to the leaders and students. I am proud to be a part of a congregation that prioritizes this education and values the knowledge it imparts to our young people.

~ Sarah

Upcoming RE Event

RE Sunday is May 22nd! Our annual intergenerational service, led by the Religious Education classes, is a time to hear from our children and youth what they have been learning this year.
Parents, RE Sunday is an important event and we hope to see many faces who will join in sharing their work this year! The Sundays leading to this day are also important as the classes will be planning and practicing their parts. Join us for this annual service!
—Sarah and Michele

Can You Teach This Summer?
RE is in sore need of teachers and helpers for the summer. Age groups are preschool/kindergarten: first through third; and fourth through sixth grades.

Please fill out an RE Teacher Screening Form from Sarah or Michele and provide two references.

Sunday Morning Forum

The Sunday Morning Forum meets at 9 a.m. in the Red Cross Building across the parking lot from the church. Everyone is welcome! Childcare is provided.

May 8: “Spiritualizing Our Nature.” Caroline Barnhart and Members of the Writers Interest Group.

Last year, Caroline formed a writers group to encourage us to take pen in hand and record our thoughts. Last week, the group released a 16-page booklet with 7 brief essays in response to a question suggested by William Ellery Channing: What does it mean to spiritualize our nature? Come to Forum and join the discussion on this one!

May 15: “What Music Means to Me.” Roy Barnhart, Edwin Layer, Sharon McKnight, and Eric Thiel.

There has been music in the air at Forum all spring with Kaye McSpadden’s program on Malvina Reynolds and Joe Rubinstein’s history of Jazz. Now, four music makers of the church join forces to tell us what music means to them and to demonstrate that with a flourish.

Minister’s Muse

Minister’s Muse

I don't know if you have noticed but there is a lot to do around the church and somehow there is a faithful group of people who seem to show up and do it.  They show up with light bulbs, ladders, washrags, new shelves, muscle, flowers, and lots of great heartedness.  They are givers.  It is probably easy to notice if the toilet paper is running out or the furnace is not too steady - or something didn't make it into the newsletter or.... It is easy to notice what you think should happen but you don't see happening.  It is harder to do two other things that would contribute more.

The first is to notice all the things that are done, the lights that work - like a light was out on Wednesday in front of the church and someone noticed that and replaced the bulb before the news cameras started running.  The sanctuary was its normal self this Sunday in spite of two large gatherings there this week - the Seder in which small children dropped crumbs and general merriment abounded - and the birthday party for our welcoming congregation eighth year anniversary in which 90 people shared cake and punch and celebrated the loving activism this congregation has taken on.  A new thermostat arrived.  In addition, the congregation has been working hard to meet in committees and formulate long and short range plans, hire new staff, take care of our bats (well - usher them out), plant flowers for Mother's Day, revisit congregational structure, put out the newsletter, plan the banner event, set out the candles, attend the Annual District meeting, and that's only a sliver of the picture.  I wonder how often each of you notices that this place is powered by volunteers -congregations are.  So first, I invite you to notice all that is done - because the people who sit next to you (and perhaps you yourself) do it.

Next is to wonder if you notice that something isn't done if you could somehow help to do it.  I mean - the people who attend here and do a lion's share of work are volunteers - like you are.  They're offering their time and energy to get things done - just as you have - perhaps not here - but at some other place.  If a light bulb needs replacing you can contact someone on our growing Buildings & Grounds committee or you could just ask where the utility closet is and help out.  When I went to another UU church recently and there were four carafes of coffee and none of hot water - although there were tea bags.  I asked people where I might find hot water and they didn't know.  It must have been someone else's job to make the tea drinkers comfortable.  Being a competent person I went to the kitchen myself and found a beverage.  But I wonder - if you noticed that we were out of coffee, or hot water, or orders of service, or seats - do you stop to think - now - why isn't that committee doing that?  Or do you think - I wonder if that committee needs some help?

Either way - if you notice what's going right or if you help out with what may be slower to ripen, you'll be happier and the volunteers who are working hard will be happier too.  In fact the whole congregation will get a boost from the positive attitude and energy that these new spins can put on things.  Just give these two possibilities a try — you might like it.

We're so lucky to have so many people who give time and energy to make the wheels turn here.  I think that I get to see this more clearly because I sit in so many meetings and watch congregants step up, tirelessly, and make a difference in small and large ways.  Perhaps you'll notice, too if you just try to see those things that are harder to notice because they are just taken care of.  It's worth a celebration.  Even if we have to clean up the crumbs afterward.

                                                            —Hilary
