Congregational Meeting Update

The following items were discussed at the Congregational Meeting on Dec. 12, 2005:

  • Canvass Results—The Stewardship Committee reports that there are a few pledge cards that have not yet been returned.
  • 2005 Budget—A motion was made and seconded to approve the 2005 budget.  Motion passed.
  • New Building Decision-Making Process—Our Heartland District director had been consulted about what percentage of approval is recommended for significant congregational decisions. She said that a “super-majority” of 75-90 percent might be appropriate. The Board will discuss and investigate what other congregations have done in similar situations.
  • New Building Information—Barny Dunning discussed information in the New Building Document. We do not have the results of work being done on a “take off bid” and will probably not have them before January.
  • Two Congregational Meetings will be held this winter—one in January 2005 to discuss the new building, and one in February 2005 to vote on the new building.

Come Skate on Jan. 4

A UU all-generational Ice Skating Party is set for Tuesday, Jan. 4, from 6:30- 8:30 pm, at the Riverside Skating Center, Tapawingo Park, West Lafayette. We have rented the ice skating rink for 2 hours. The cost for rental is $170, so donations will be needed. There will be a sign up sheet in the back of the church - please  note your ability to donate as well as your ability to skate on the signup sheet.

Skate rental is $2/pair. There is a cap of 110 people in the rental group.

There are some rules associated with the skating rink , and we are requiring all children to have an adult be responsible for them. Other rules will be available on a handout in the back of the sanctuary. Please read them and make sure your children are clear about the rules.

If you are not a skater please feel free to stop by and see the rest of us floundering on the ice. I'm sure there will be some great photo opportunities!

There are nice walking paths along the skating rink, on the bridge and Riehle Plaza, and lots of other activities to pursue in the immediate area - see a movie at Wabash Landing, eat at Panera Bread, grab coffee or hot chocolate at Starbucks, finish your shopping at Borders Bookstore, or go for a beer at Scotty's Brewpub.

Parking is available in the Tapawingo Park parking lot or the Wabash Landing parking garage , $1 for 3 hours (parking tickets can be validated at Border’s and Panera’s.

Please join us for this fun wintertime intergenerational activity!

Religious Education Happenings

Religious Education Director: Sarah Boulac
RE Committee Co-Chairs: Beth Misner, Cheryl Fowler

The weeks of my maternity leave and the first weeks of Daphne’s life have moved with great speed.  Now I am back to work and appreciate the warm welcome I have felt as I get caught up with the additions and changes that have occurred over the last months.

Especially in the last few weeks I have been looking forward to being back to work, feeling a growing sense of excitement and great potential for new meaning and enjoyment with my work as the Director of Religious Education in combination with my new role as a parent.  I have been looking forward to returning to this place of love and learning. I am excited about the journey we take with the children and youth and look forward to new ways to explore our faith.

I want to express my thanks again to the Religious Education Committee and especially to Cheryl Fowler and Beth Misner for their volunteer work while I was on leave.  They have done a tremendous job in keeping things running smoothly and have been a great support as I catch up with the wonderful work they have done.

I do not yet have regular office hours, but will publish them in an upcoming newsletter.  In the meantime, feel free to email me at sboulac@hotmail.com or call me on my cell phone at 414-2432 any day except Saturday and Monday which are my days off.

I look forward to our Sundays together.

2005 – The Miracle Year

The year 2005 will be the 100th anniversary of Albert Einstein’s "miracle year", the year he published 4 scientific papers that changed our view of the world and gave us a new appreciation for the creative power of the human brain. The United Nations has declared 2005 as the International Year of Physics with a focus on Einstein’s life and contributions. Schools, museums and scientific organizations are preparing special programs. Our Forum is also organizing a series of programs designed to reflect Einstein’s example of how science can be human in its spirit, wise in its uses and moral in its purposes.

December 26 No Forum Meeting

January 2  "A Look Back…and a Look Forward." Ernest McDaniel. This is our annual retrospective glance at last year’s programs together with a discussion of program ideas for the coming year.

January 9  "Assault on Education"  Dave Wilms. Teaching accelerated biology and advance placement environmental science in an affluent community should offer welcome opportunities to open minds and awaken spirits, but national and state curriculum goals do not always coincide and conservative attitudes can abide in affluent neighborhoods.

January 16 "Written in the Stars"   John P. Finley. An astrophysicist reflects upon a journey from the edge of the universe.

Minister’s Muse

Thanks to the efforts of many volunteers and the great talents of our kids, this year’s Christmas Pageant was high energy, great fun, and a wonderful celebration of the holiday.

We have had a good time with our previous play for four years – but it was time for a change and this year’s play integrated classic tales (Dickens), the Biblical Jesus story, and some modern messages.

We had fun putting it together and the children turned in impressive performances.  The intergenerational service always has a certain spark and joy – and even a little air of spontaneity. There is something so special about that moment when a congregation joins together in the first Christmas carol of the year -- a special energy that seems to burst forth made of community, memory, and melody. And there is nothing to beat that Gloooooooooooooooria.

This was the first year that we moved the service to a Sunday morning. Many churches hold their pageants a week or two before Christmas to allow more families and children to participate. And, sure enough, there were many more kids and families who were in town and able to participate in and enjoy the service. There are too many people to thank and actors to praise to risk listing them and missing one precious person.

From there it is a joy to await the quieter inspiration of the Christmas Eve service.  This year so many people will be contributing their music that it will be a service that will truly and deeply celebrate the peace that we so often hear about at this time of the year, long so much for, and see so little of.

Our world is in such turmoil that it feels essential to discover the quality of peace.

There are a few ways that people think of the peace of the season.

The first is the thing I most think of – the Peace on Earth and Good Will To All thing.  I want to think that people will reflect upon the justice teachings of Jesus, of the terrible violence of his time and turn toward peace to honor his birth and his life.

The other sense that people think of the peace of the season is the idea of inner peace – of the peace that can come within. This is a tough quality to attain and, I think, only comes in small moments.  It can be hard to find that time when you are up to your neck in family – sometimes they can drive you crazy – but sometimes the times together are so rare and precious you don’t want to miss a moment.

Too often the holidays are times when people suffer from depression a sense of isolation or disappointment. If your holiday offers rough spots and deep challenges I hope that you will reach out and connect with people who care and can empathize. It is when the mall music stops and the real music starts, when our voices blend with the voices of many others, when people find one another in a warm place and share the bright glow of candle light. Sometimes peace can be found in that candle flame – pure and bright. It also happens when a person can step away from the hustle and bustle and find a moment to simply breathe.

I hope that wherever you are for the winter holiday – over Christmas or the New Year – that you can find a time to celebrate with others that brings warmth and joy and that you will take time to establish peace in your heart and mind.

May you have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. And as Unitarian Universalists – it can be helpful to remember that all year long there are many New Years and many times to build hope, find peace, and to celebrate.
